Ben Flavel has built a high growth venture with a growth by global expansion strategy. He secured early stage investment from Australia and successfully expanded into the US cornering his niche. Ben shares with you his secrets to gaining traction offshore that you can apply to your own venture immediately.
Ben founded Living Room Floor Productions in 2002, which produced a number of “improv” nights around Melbourne, over 20 short films, comedy festival and fringe festival shows and a major production at Chapel off Chapel. In 2006, the realisation that as fun as the Living Room Floor’s creative endeavours were, there was very little money to be made, led Ben to enrol in the Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (MEI) at Swinburne University. It was also around this time that the seed for what would become CheckinLine was planted.
In 2011, Ben decided to focus full-time on CheckinLine which replicates the physical act of “camping out” for tickets online. It solves the online congestion and frustration caused when popular events go on sale and enables brands to engage one-on-one with their customers during the process. This patented concept was new to the market and offered an extremely challenging road to market.
After a year piloting the CheckinLine platform with users and a refined focus on Sports and Ticketing as the initial markets, it was determined that the USA offered a much more fertile ground for business expansion. A complete rebuild of the platform in 2012 enabled the explorations of more flexible and scalable business models and in 2013 a number of beta trials were conducted both in Australia and the US, along with a $250K angel round of funding. CheckinLine is now working with five of the major global ticketing companies, a host of professional sports teams and other strategic partners via eQueue Pty Ltd in Melbourne and CheckinLine INC in Palo Alto.
