Moovit is by far the best app for navigating your way around Melbourne on public transport. Simply choose your origin and destination, what time you would like to either leave or arrive and in addition to showing you tram, train and bus options, the app includes a live map of your journey. It will display where you are on a map, which stop you are currently approaching and will send you a notification when you need the next stop.
You will need to purchase a physical MYKI card to travel on public transport.
UBER is a ride share and private car service that is less expensive, more reliable and more friendly than a taxi. UBERx fares in Melbourne are (as of July 2016):

To get an UBER from Melbourne Airport, drop the UBERx pickup pin in a surrounding street outside the airport exclusion zone. Then, immediately call your driver and 1) tell him which passenger bay you are standing at and 2) find out the colour of the car. Remember to treat them as a friend, not a driver when being pickup at the airport. For example, shake their hand and sit in the front seat - not the back by yourself.
